Plasma is the fourth state of matter; we know it is the most abundant form of matter in the universe, estimated to constitute up to 99%.

An intense solar storm could trigger a global catastrophe, setting us back to the Renaissance, with absolute, incalculable, and immeasurable damage ranging from biological and engineering aspects to economic ones. Recovery from such an event, if it is even possible, could take generations.

Plasma behavior, ionization and discharge effects in electrical and electronic systems

We can say that plasma has a counterintuitive behavior, since it is essentially collective and dominated by charge-at-a-distance effects; when the temperature increases, collisions between its particles are minimized (particle-field interaction), unlike gases, where the behavior between molecules occurs in their proximity.

When the amount of energy in matter increases for one reason or another, it will produce various interaction effects on the particles, pushing electrons out of the center of their atoms (ionization), thus producing a lattice charge effect.

Plasma evaluation in electrical and electronic equipment or devices is inevitable and non-negotiable since it is the promoter of partial and total discharges which produce all kinds of problems in their performance including irreversible and catastrophic damage.
